This tool uses text rules, not AI. "Term: definition" lines flip into produce the term items, question lines keep their answers, and plain statements lose their most distinctive word so you must supply it. One answer per item is the design: short answer works when exactly one short response is right, and your notes decide what that response is.
Recognition flatters; production tells the truth
Picking the right option feels like knowing, but options do half the work: they remind, narrow and hint. Producing the answer from a bare question is the unassisted version, and memory research's testing effect finds the benefit of practice grows with exactly that effort. Short answer is therefore not multiple choice minus convenience; it is a different measurement, and mostly a sterner, more useful one.
A good item has one short right answer
The format fails when the stem admits many defensible responses: "discuss osmosis" is an essay wearing the wrong label, and grading it as short answer punishes honest variety. Write stems whose answer is a term, a number, a step or a single sentence: what moves, which direction, name the organelle, state the rule. If you cannot write the answer key in one line, the item belongs in a longer format.
The answer key is a promise, so write it first
Key first, question second: draft the exact expected answer, then build the stem that demands precisely it. This order catches ambiguity before students do, and it settles grading disputes in advance, accept synonyms that preserve the concept, reject near misses that change it, and say which is which in the key. A key written after the fact inherits the stem's vagueness instead of curing it.
Partial credit without grade inflation
Short answers fail in informative ways: right concept with the wrong term, right term misapplied, half a mechanism. A two point scale per item, full for the key's answer, one for a defined near miss, zero otherwise, captures the difference without turning grading into negotiation. Define the near miss in the key, "names the gradient but not the direction", so the same slip scores the same for everyone.
