Energy flows once and thins fast
Producers fix light into biomass; each transfer up the trophic ladder passes roughly ten percent, the rest spent on metabolism and lost as heat, which is why chains rarely exceed four or five links and why top predators are few. Energy flows through; matter cycles, carbon, nitrogen and water looping via photosynthesis, decomposition and fixation. Keep flow and cycle distinct: the exam tests the distinction directly.
Populations: two curves and the limits that choose between them
Unchecked growth is exponential; real growth meets carrying capacity and bends logistic. The limits sort by density: dependent ones, competition, disease, predation, tighten as crowds grow; independent ones, frost, flood, fire, strike at any density. Given a scenario, classify the limit first, then pick the curve, and the calculation questions, growth rate from births minus deaths, follow mechanically.
Communities knot through named interactions
Competition for one niche ends in exclusion or partition, resources split by time, height or size; predators and prey cycle with a lag; symbioses file by who pays: mutualism both gain, commensalism one gains free, parasitism one gains at the other's cost. The tested skill is classification with evidence, name the interaction and the currency exchanged, plus the classic graphs: cycling predator prey, staggered partitioned feeders.
Keystones and invasives: small causes, large rearrangements
A keystone species holds community structure beyond its abundance, the sea star whose removal lets mussels carpet the shore; remove it and diversity collapses. Invasives run the inverse experiment: transported past their old predators and parasites, they boom and displace. Both cases grade the same reasoning, trace the interaction web from the change outward, which is why food web diagrams anchor the questions.
Disruption scenarios are the unit's applied exam
Eutrophication runs fertiliser to algae to decomposition to oxygen collapse; habitat fragmentation shrinks populations toward drift and edge effects, connecting back to the evolution unit; simplified ecosystems lose the redundancy that absorbs shocks, which is biodiversity's tested value. Each scenario wants the causal chain written in order, input, mechanism, endpoint, because the chain is what earns points, not the vocabulary word alone.
