Exponential growth is a claim that nothing is in the way
The J curve happens while resources impose no ceiling yet, invasions, fresh colonisations, bacteria in new media. The S curve is the honest version: growth slows as density rises and settles near carrying capacity. Questions give a curve and want the limiting mechanism named, and overshoot followed by dieback is the standard twist.
Density dependence is the sorting question inside every scenario
Disease, competition and predation tighten as crowding rises, which makes them density dependent. A cold snap or an eruption removes populations at any size, which makes it independent. Exam stems hide the sorting cue in a story; the question underneath is always whether the limit responds to crowding or arrives regardless.
r and K are budget strategies, and the graph gives them away
A species spending its energy on many cheap offspring recovers fast after disturbance and rides boom and bust cycles. One spending on few expensive offspring tracks carrying capacity and suffers when habitat shrinks. The r and K framing plus a survivorship curve answers a large share of the unit's multiple choice.
The demographic transition is the human version of the same limits
Death rates fall first with sanitation and medicine, birth rates follow later as economies and education change, and the gap between the two is the population boom. Each stage pairs with a pyramid shape: wide base early, straight sides late. Placing a country by its pyramid is the unit's most repeated free response move.
Fertility questions reward the mechanism, so name what moves the rate
Total fertility rate falls where education, income and access to family planning rise, and replacement level sits near 2.1 births. Momentum matters too: a young population keeps growing after rates drop because its largest cohorts are still reaching childbearing age. Naming momentum turns a describing answer into an explaining one.
