The asymmetry that organises the unit

Energy enters an ecosystem as sunlight, degrades at every transfer and leaves as heat. Matter has nowhere to leave to, so the same atoms move through organisms, soil, water and air repeatedly. Every cycle diagram in the unit is a picture of the second half of that sentence.

The ten percent rule and what it explains

Roughly a tenth of the energy at one trophic level reaches the next. That single figure explains why food chains are short, why top predators are rare, and why eating lower on the chain feeds more people from the same land. Questions often ask you to compute or to explain a consequence, so hold the reason as well as the number.

Gross and net productivity are a subtraction, not two topics

Gross primary productivity is everything producers capture. Net is what remains after they respire for themselves, and it is what is actually available to the level above. Confusing the two is one of the most common errors in this unit and it is fixed by remembering which one the rest of the food web can eat.

Decomposers are the part people leave out of the diagram

They return matter to the soil, which is the step that closes every cycle. A carbon or nitrogen diagram drawn without them is not merely incomplete, it is wrong, because nothing would come back. Free response answers that mention decomposition tend to score better for exactly this reason.

Nitrogen is the cycle that carries the most detail

Fixation, nitrification, assimilation and denitrification each move nitrogen between forms, and the exam asks about the steps by name. Unlike carbon, the atmospheric form is unusable by most organisms until something converts it, and that bottleneck is why the cycle is examined more heavily than its share of the syllabus suggests.
