What a photograph is good at
Printed text, and it is very good at it. A clean shot of a textbook page or a worksheet gives the same result as a file, because character recognition on printed type is a solved problem. The advantage is availability: the page in front of you never needs to have been a file first.
How to take one that reads cleanly
Four things, in order of how often they matter. Fill the frame with the page rather than the desk. Flatten the spine or hold the page down, because curved text is where recognition first fails. Shoot from directly above instead of at an angle. And take two pages as two photographs, not one wide shot, since halving the resolution halves what survives.
What a photograph drops
Anything the words do not carry. A diagram with unlabelled arrows, a graph whose meaning lives in its shape, a table whose columns matter more than its cells: these come through as marks rather than as content, and questions built from them will be thin. When the page is mostly a figure, the honest move is to write one sentence yourself about what the figure shows, then photograph the page and add that sentence.
Questions, not a transcript
What comes back is not the page retyped. It is a set of questions built from what the page asserts, each carrying the reasoning behind its answer so you can check the method rather than accept a result. That distinction is the whole point: reading a page again produces recognition, and being asked about it produces retrieval, which is the thing that survives to an exam.
