Describe the scatterplot before touching a formula

Form, direction, strength, unusual points: the four word checklist comes first, because everything downstream assumes it. r only measures linear association, so a curved cloud with r near zero is not evidence of no relationship, and the exam plants exactly that case to catch formula first students.

The least squares line has a definition, not just an output

The fitted line minimises the sum of squared residuals, which is what least squares means, and it always passes through the point of means. Slope interpretation is a rubric sentence: for each additional unit of x, the predicted y changes by the slope, in context, with predicted said out loud. Intercept earns its sentence only when x equals zero makes sense.

Residuals judge the model

A residual is observed minus predicted, and the residual plot is the verdict: patternless scatter blesses the linear model, curvature or fanning convicts it. r squared then reports the share of variation in y the line explains. The pairing matters because a high r squared with a curved residual plot is still a wrong model, and questions pair them precisely to test who checks.

Outliers pull, and influence is positional

A point far from the cloud in y inflates residuals; a point extreme in x has leverage, and can swing the slope while leaving a small residual behind. The tested distinction is that influence depends on position, not size of error: remove the suspect point, refit, and describe what moved. Free response asks for the effect on slope and r, so rehearse both directions.

Extrapolation and causation are the two forbidden leaps

Extrapolation predicts outside the observed x range, where the fitted pattern has no warrant. And association is not causation: a strong r between two observational variables permits prediction, not mechanism, with lurking variables the standard explanation. Both refusals are scored sentences, and both begin with naming the data's limits.

What does AP Statistics Unit 5 cover?

How do I interpret slope for full credit?

For each additional unit of x, the predicted y changes by the slope value, stated in the variables' context. The word predicted is graded.

What does r squared actually say?

The fraction of variation in the response the linear model explains. It does not certify the model: check the residual plot first.

What is the difference between outlier and influential point?

Influence comes from position: points extreme in x have leverage and can swing the slope while leaving small residuals. Outliers in y inflate residuals.

Why is extrapolation penalised?

The fitted pattern is evidenced only inside the observed x range; beyond it the prediction has no data behind it.
