Hearths and diffusion: farming is invented more than once
The Neolithic Revolution happens independently in several hearths, Southwest Asia, East Asia, Mesoamerica among them, and crops and animals diffuse outward along trade and migration routes. Exam questions reward the plural: name a hearth, a crop that started there, and the route it travelled, rather than treating agriculture as one event.
Two axes sort every practice: intensity and purpose
Intensive systems spend labour or capital per hectare, wet rice most of all; extensive systems spend hectares, ranching and shifting cultivation among them. Cross that with purpose, subsistence feeding the household against commercial feeding a market, and nearly every named practice finds its cell. Scenario questions describe a farm and ask for the cell, so practise placing them.
Von Thunen: distance to market draws rings
In von Thunen's model, land use sorts by transport cost on an isotropic plain: perishable dairy and market gardens sit nearest the city, then forest for heavy fuel, then grains, then grazing at the edge. The model's assumptions are the examinable part, one market, uniform land, no modern refrigeration, because prompts ask what breaks when each assumption does.
The Green Revolution trades inputs for yields
The Green Revolution spreads bred varieties, fertiliser, pesticides and irrigation from the 1940s onward, raising yields sharply in Asia and Latin America while bypassing much of Africa's rain fed farming. The graded skill is holding both columns: calories and famine deferred on one side, input costs, water demand and uneven adoption on the other.
Survey and settlement patterns are history written on land
Metes and bounds follows streams and stones in the American East; township and range grids the Midwest; long lots ladder rivers where French practice ran. Villages cluster around water and defence, disperse where machines replace neighbours, and stretch linear along roads. Read a rural landscape's lines and you can often name who surveyed it and when, which is precisely what map based questions ask.
