Benefit and harm are both graded, and specificity is the currency

The unit's core move is naming an innovation's purpose, then its unintended column: a fitness tracker motivates exercise and publishes movement patterns; recommendation engines surface relevant content and narrow what you see. Credit follows specificity, who is affected, through what mechanism, so practise writing effects as mechanisms rather than adjectives.

The digital divide is about access, and access has layers

The digital divide names unequal access to computing, and the exam wants its layers: devices, bandwidth, reliability and the skills to use them, varying by geography, income and infrastructure. Consequences compound, schoolwork, jobs and services assume connection, so the divide widens other gaps. Name the layer and the affected group and the point lands.

Bias arrives in the data, not in the silicon

Algorithmic bias enters when training data mirrors past human decisions: a hiring model trained on yesterday's hires reproduces yesterday's preferences at scale and with a neutral face. The tested understanding is the mechanism, biased inputs, faithful learning, amplified outputs, and the remedy vocabulary: diverse data, auditing outcomes, humans reviewing edge cases.

Crowdsourcing and citizen science distribute the work

Crowdsourcing pools small contributions from many people into results no single contributor could build, traffic conditions from drivers' phones, transcriptions, funding. Citizen science applies the same pattern to research, distributed observation and classification feeding real studies. Questions ask what the crowd supplies, scale, coverage, local knowledge, and what quality control the design needs.

Safe computing has a vocabulary, and each term is testable

PII is data that identifies a person, name, address, identifiers, location trails, and its exposure enables theft and impersonation. Phishing imitates trusted senders to harvest credentials; malware rides downloads; encryption protects data in transit; multifactor authentication stacks independent proofs so one stolen password is not enough. Learn them as definition plus the attack each one answers.
