First establish that anything happened at all
A chemical change makes new substances, and the observable evidence is short: colour change, gas evolved, precipitate formed, temperature moved. Dissolving alone is physical. Exam stems describe a mixture and ask whether a reaction occurred, and the credited answer names the evidence rather than asserting the conclusion.
The net ionic equation is a deletion exercise with rules
Write the full equation, split every strong electrolyte, strong acids, soluble salts, into its ions, then cancel whatever appears unchanged on both sides. What survives is the chemistry. The discipline is knowing what splits: weak acids, solids, liquids and gases stay whole, and splitting them is the unit's most reliable lost point.
Classification is asking what moved
Redox transfers electrons, visible when oxidation numbers change. Acid base transfers protons, the Bronsted definition the course runs on. Precipitation transfers ions out of solution into a solid. One question, what moved, sorts every reaction in the unit, and naming the mover is usually the first point of the free response.
Oxidation numbers are bookkeeping, so assign before judging
Assign oxidation numbers by the standard rules, then compare before and after: the element that rose was oxidised and the one that fell was reduced. The species containing the element that fell is the oxidising agent, which is the phrasing the exam tests because it reads backwards. Assign first, conclude second, and the agent questions stop being guesswork.
Stoichiometry prices the reaction, and titration applies it
The balanced equation is an exchange rate between moles, and stoichiometry converts a measured mass or volume through it. Titration is the applied case: at the equivalence point the moles of titrant match the moles of analyte by the ratio, so a burette volume becomes a concentration. The limiting reactant logic from this unit then runs through the whole course.
