Point against nonpoint: can you name the pipe?
A point source has an address, a discharge pipe, a spill, a stack, and law can meter it; nonpoint pollution arrives from everywhere at once, farm runoff, street oil, lawn fertiliser, and only land management can slow it. The classification decides the remedy, permit against practice, which is why it opens most water questions on the exam.
Eutrophication: fertility becomes suffocation
Nitrogen and phosphorus from fields and sewage feed algal blooms; the bloom dies, decomposers feast, and respiration spends the dissolved oxygen until fish suffocate: eutrophication's chain, nutrients, bloom, decomposition, hypoxia, must be written in order for credit. Scale it up and river mouths grow seasonal dead zones, the Gulf's the standard case; the oxygen sag curve draws the same story downstream of one discharge.
Toxins travel and concentrate
Persistent, fat soluble compounds resist breakdown and lodge in tissue, so each trophic step concentrates them: biomagnification is why top predators and nursing infants carry the highest burdens, the eggshell thinning raptors the canonical case. Solid waste has an afterlife, engineered or not
A sanitary landfill stacks liners, leachate collection and daily cover to keep buried waste from the water table, and captures methane as it brews; open dumps skip the engineering and leak. E waste exports heavy metals to informal recyclers; plastics fragment to microplastic and persist. The reduce, reuse, recycle hierarchy plus composting are the graded answers, matched to the waste stream named.
Treatment and design close the loop
Sewage treatment stages the cleanup: primary settles solids, secondary digests organics with microbes, tertiary polishes nutrients before discharge, and combined sewers overflow in storms, a tested design flaw.
