Fossil fuels: density bought with carbon

Fossil fuels are ancient biomass compressed into energy density, which is why they industrialised the world: coal for heat and power, refined oil for transport, gas for both. The sheet's cost column: carbon dioxide per unit heat, coal worst; sulfur and particulates; mining and drilling damage. Reserves concentrate geographically, which the exam turns into dependency and price questions.

Natural gas is cleaner at the flame, leakier on the way

Combined cycle gas plants emit roughly half coal's carbon per unit electricity and far less ash and sulfur, which made gas the bridge fuel argument. The counterentry is methane itself: leaks at wells, pipes and compressors deliver a potent short lived greenhouse gas, and fracking adds water use and induced seismicity to the sheet. Questions want both columns weighed, not a verdict recited.

Nuclear: carbon light, waste heavy

Fission boils water without combustion, so operating carbon is minimal and output runs around the clock. The ledger's other side: spent fuel radioactive for millennia with no permanent repository operating at scale, high build costs, and rare but consequential accidents. The graded skill is comparing risk types, chronic emissions against low probability high consequence events, rather than ranking by fear.

Renewables: clean flows, bound to place and weather

Renewables harvest flows instead of stocks: wind and solar cost no fuel and emit nothing at use, but arrive intermittently and where geography allows; hydro stores energy behind dams while rewriting rivers and displacing communities; geothermal serves plate edges; biomass renews only as fast as it regrows. Storage and grids are the coupling technologies, and the exam pairs each source with its siting logic.

Consumption splits by development, and efficiency goes first

Per person energy use tracks wealth: developed economies burn multiples of developing ones, and industrialising giants drive demand growth. That is why efficiency is the unit's closing argument: better buildings, vehicles and processes deliver the same service for less energy at lower cost than any new plant, the lowest cost capacity being the demand you never create. Cost benefit questions expect that answer stated plainly.
