Composite exams: the weighted settlement

When an exam has parts, the grade is a settlement between them: each section's score times its weight, summed over the weights. Written 74 at seventy percent with oral 90 at thirty percent settles at 78,8, the strong oral pulling the grade nearly five points. The tool runs this arithmetic on every keystroke, which makes it just as useful before the exam, for scenario testing, as after, for checking the announced result.

The dominant section rarely announces itself

A section worth seventy percent controls the grade even when the other parts feel harder: raising the written paper by ten points moves the composite by seven, while the same ten on the oral moves it three. Before dividing preparation time equally between parts, multiply each section's likely improvement by its weight; the product, not the difficulty, says where hours pay. Equal preparation for unequal weights is the composite exam's classic mistake.

Per section minimum rules

Some exam regulations require a floor in every section, fail one part badly enough and the exam fails regardless of the average. The calculator averages; it cannot enforce a floor across rows, so check the regulation's floor against each section score yourself before trusting the composite. After the result: which section teaches the lesson

A composite hides its parts: 78,8 sounds like one performance but was a 74 and a 90 wearing one coat. The row that deserves review is the weakest heavy one, in the example, the written paper, because its weight makes every recovered point count most next time. Resitting or retaking decisions follow the same logic: recompute the composite with a realistic improved score in one section at a time, and let the arithmetic rank the options.
