This tool uses text rules, not AI. A line written as "term: meaning" becomes a two sided card and any other line loses its longest word so you have to supply it. The output is tab separated, which is what makes it portable between apps rather than trapped in one. Your text stays in the browser and is never sent anywhere.
What software genuinely does better
Three things, and they are not small. It knows when to show a card, which is the whole of spaced repetition and the one job a paper pile cannot do without a filing system and a diary. It never loses a card and never leaves a deck at home. And it scales: two thousand cards is unremarkable on a phone and unmanageable in a shoebox. The scheduling algorithms most apps use descend from a published one, SM-2, and the paper ancestor of the whole idea is the Leitner system, a row of boxes you move a card between.
What paper does better, and it is not nostalgia
Writing a card by hand is slower, and the slowness is the feature: you cannot copy a definition without reading it, and the act of forming the words is itself a light encoding step. Research on note taking repeatedly finds that longhand notes, being slower, force selection where typing permits transcription. The second advantage is physical: a pile has a size, so you can see how much you do not know and watch it shrink, which no progress bar quite replaces. The humble index card also has no notifications on it.
The failure specific to digital decks
It is trivially easy to acquire ten thousand cards you did not write, and a downloaded deck is somebody else's selection of what matters. The cards will be technically correct and will not match your syllabus, your notation or the things you personally get wrong, and you will spend hours reviewing items you already knew. The second failure is bulk import: turning every line of a chapter into a card produces a deck that is a book with extra steps. Card count is the metric to distrust; a hundred cards you chose beats two thousand you inherited, which is the same argument as writing your own questions in a study guide.
Formatting a card so it can be answered
One fact per card, and a front with exactly one possible answer. If the back has three bullet points, that is three cards, because a card you can half answer cannot be scored honestly. Where the material is a list, either make it a gap fill, the cloze form, or accept that the list belongs in a summary rather than in a deck. Images help where the image is the content, an anatomical diagram or a graph shape, and hurt where they are decoration. And add a reverse card only when reversing makes sense: a word and its translation, yes; a definition and its term, usually yes; a formula and its name, rarely.
Not being trapped by the format you chose
Any deck worth building will outlive the app you built it in, so the export format matters more than any feature on a comparison page. Tab separated text is the lowest common denominator and every serious tool reads it, including Anki and Quizlet. The copy button above produces exactly that. Are digital flashcards better than paper?
Better at scheduling, at scale and at never being lost. Worse at the writing, which is slower on paper and where a real part of the learning happens. Most people should use both.
